BCCI approves ICC proposals
The Board of Cricket for Control in India (BCCI) has formally taken the decision to approve the proposals of the ICC working group. The emergent meeting of the BCCI working committee was chaired by Shivlal Yadav, the BCCI vice-president in the absence of N Srinivasan, whose mother had passed away earlier in the day.
The media release said that:
The committee discussed at length the proposals of the ICC Working Group and felt that this proposal was in the interest of Cricket at large. The committee unanimously made the following decisions:
1 - Formally approved the proposal of the Working Group
2 - Authorized the Office Bearers to enter into agreements with ICC for participating in the ICC Events and Host ICC Events, subject to the proposal being approved in the ICC Board.
3 - Authorized the Office Bearers to discuss bilateral matches with other Full Members (including Pakistan) and sign formal FTP Agreements.
The decision comes on the back of widespread criticism and disapproval of many cricket boards including Cricket South Africa(CSA) and Pakistan Cricket Board(PCB). The ICC proposals could give greater power to the BCCI, England Cricket Board (ECB) and Cricket Australia(CA) while marginalising the other countries.
As things stand right now, 75 per cent of ICC earnings are divided between the 10 full member countries equally and the remainder goes to associate members. In the lead-up to negotiations for the next ICC commercial rights cycle -- covering the period from 2015 to 2023 -- India apparently wants its share of the global game's money to reflect the proportion of revenue the country generates.
The planned overhaul of the ICC would also see a new executive committee formed by India, England and Australia that would decide most of the key issues in cricket, and a relegation system, from which they would be protected. Other changes would include a two-tier system for Test cricket in which India, Australia and England would be exempt from relegation and removal of control over scheduling from the ICC to allow countries to essentially pick and choose who they play.
Cricket South Africa has spoken out against the plan, calling for an immediate withdrawal of the "fundamentally flawed" proposal. It has also drawn criticism from the Federation of International Cricketers' Association executive chairman Paul Marsh, who has called it unconstitutional.
The structural overhaul plan is set to be presented at ICC's quarterly meeting in Dubai on January 28 and 29. It must have the support of seven of the 10 full member nations to be passed.

Warne to coach Australia spinners
Shane Warne is set to return to the Australian set-up in a coaching role. He's been named as a specialist coach ahead of the T20 World Cup in March. Warne will be taking up a short-term role in coaching the spinners in specific.
Australia's head coach, Darren Lehmann, has been a fan of using the services of former players to help the national team. He beleieves that skill based training helps national teams a lot.
We believe our national teams can really benefit from more specific skill-based coaching as and when it is needed. This will mean that from time to time we will enlist the support of experts in their craft to work with our players and share their experiences, Lehmann said.
Since the World T20 will be played in Bangladesh, the emphasis has increased on the spin bowling department. Lehmann believes that Warne's expertise could be invaluable.
In the case of the ICC World Twenty 20, we believe spin bowling will be critical to success. Theres no better person than Shane to help guide the spinners we select in that squad.
He was a gifted cricketer and remains passionate about spin bowling and seeing our players be the best that they can be. Were thrilled to have him on board.
Warne who has played the role of coach/mentor with his IPL team, Rajasthan, is also thrilled at this new opportunity.
Im excited to be working with Australias spinners in South Africa. Im looking forward to helping them with some intense bowling preparation ahead of the World Twenty 20, where well specifically work on tactics and mindset, said Warne.
The Australian Twenty 20 side plays three matches against South Africa on 9 March (Port Elizabeth), 12 March (Durban) and 14 March (Pretoria) before departing for the ICC World Twenty 20 in Bangladesh.
Raina needs to work on shot-selection
MS Dhoni hoped Suresh Raina would take some confidence from his attacking knock in India's defeat against New Zealand in Hamilton, going forward into the series.
The 27-year-old Raina has been a key player for India in limited overs cricket and has so far scored 29 half-centuries and three centuries from 188 ODIs at an average of 35.38. The southpaw's power hitting and brisk running between the wickets have helped India pull off several close victories.
However, poor form since the ODI series against Australia has raised several questions on one of Dhoni's most trusted lieutenants. Raina's weakness against the short ball has been exposed and with the World Cup just a year away, the team management must be getting worried about the middle-order batsman's performance.
However, Raina did come out all guns blazing in an aggressive 22-ball knock, when he creamed 35 runs and brought India close to victory with Dhoni in the second ODI against New Zealand in Hamilton. That has been reassuring enough for the Indian captain, who continued to support his Chennai teammate, despite Raina's depressing run for India with scores of 39, DNB, 17, DNB, 16, 28, 0, 23, 34, 14, 36, DNB, 18 and 35.
"Raina is someone who plays aggressive cricket but it is important to have control over your mind as to what are the areas you want to hit. If it is not there to be hit, what are the other options you have got?," said Dhoni.
"It is not like you want to try and hit something and even if is not there to be hit, you still go for a big shot."
Faced with a desperate situation, Raina attacked and almost reaped the rewards. His aggressive knock at number six could have proved fatal for New Zealand before he fell to Kyle Mills in the 37th over.
"That (picking bad deliveries to hit) was something he did particularly well in this innings. Hopefully he will gather plenty of confidence after this innings and carry on longer in this manner," said the Indian skipper.
Could this signal a prolonged outing for Raina at number six, then?
"We have to a see a few things. We cannot change opinions and strategies after one game. It was a certain kind of situation that demanded of him this particular innings. It was good," said Dhoni, as always keeping his cards close to the chest.MS Dhoni hoped Suresh Raina would take some confidence from his attacking knock in India's defeat against New Zealand in Hamilton, going forward into the series.

'Hopefully I'll get one more chance' - Sehwag

.

Sehwag's recent form has also been poor. In 10 first-class matches this
season, Sehwag scored 279 runs at an average of 19.92 with one fifty.
The numbers include his Ranji Trophy performances for Delhi - 234 runs
in seven matches at 19.50.
"I am still practising [the big shots]," Sehwag told NDTV.
"Everybody wants to play for India and the youngsters are playing well.
They are good players and they are scoring runs but I am trying hard, I
am working hard on my skills and cricket. Hopefully I will get one more
chance before I retire.
"From my point of view, yes, they are playing well and doing well, so
all the best to them. What I can do is I can train hard. I can go out
there and play first-class matches and play club-level tournaments and
try to score runs. That I can control, but I can't control other things
like selection."
The batsman also hoped Delhi Daredevils, his IPL franchise over the
previous six years, would buy him back in the forthcoming auction.
Daredevils did not retain
any of its players before the auction, the only franchise to do so, and
will go into the auction with a full purse of Rs 600 million (approx
US$9.6 million) and three right-to-match cards.
"I am going to the auction in the IPL and anybody can buy me. If
somebody will buy me and Gautam [Gambhir] is there, or some other
international cricketer is there, I'll get a chance to play along with
them," Sehwag said. "It's a good opportunity for the franchises, they
have the option of buying big players and we are available. I am hoping
the same team will buy me. Let's see what happens in the auction."

Pakistan T20 list of probables
Wicket-keeper batsman Kamran Akmal and former captain Shoaib Malik were Monday named in Pakistan's preliminary 30-man squad for the World Twenty20 to be held in Bangladesh.
Malik led Pakistan to runners-up spot in the inaugural World Twenty20 in South Africa in 2007 and was part of Pakistan's Twenty20 squad to South Africa last year but was sent back home after suffering a finger injury.
Kamran had not been selected since being omitted from the one-day squad which lost all three matches in the Champions Trophy in England in June last year.
Allrounder Abdul Razzaq failed to find a place in the initial squad after being sent home from the South Africa tour due to hamstring injury last year.
The fifth edition of the World Twenty20 will be held in Bangladesh from March 16-April 6.
Mohammad Hafeez is expected to lead the team. He led Pakistan to a semi-final finish in the last World Twenty20 held in Sri Lanka in 2012.
Pakistan won the 2009 event held in England.
Preliminary squad: Mohammad Hafeez, Ahmad Shahzad, Sharjeel Khan, Shahzaib Hasan, Nasir Jamshaid, Khurram Manzoor, Shoaib Malik, Sohaib Maqsood, Umar Akmal, Harris Sohail, Yasir Arafat, Yasir Shah, Hammad Azam, Kamran Akmal, Shahid Khan Afridi, Zohaib Ahmed, Sohail Tanveer, Mohammad Irfan, Umar Gul, Junaid Khan, Bilawal Bhatti, Anwar Ali, Asad Ali, Ehsan Adil, Mohammad Talha, Saeed Ajmal, Zulfiqar Babar, Raza Hasan, Abdul Rehman, Sarfaraz Ahmed.
Milne doubtful for rest of ODI series
Promising New Zealand pacer Adam Milne has been rendered doubtful for the rest of the ODI series against India after he sustained a side strain during the first ODI of the five-match rubber in Napier.
Milne, who returned with figures of one for 40 from his 7.3 overs in the first ODI, had an MRI scan after arriving here to ascertain the damage. According to a report in the New Zealand Herald, Milne will be out of action until at least the end of the ODI series against India.
The report added that according to medical advice, Milne will take at least four to six weeks to get back to his full shape. Milne, who continuously clocked speed in excess of 150km/h in the first ODI, suffered the injury midway through his eighth over and the start of his third spell.
"It's tough for Milne to get injured bowling at that pace ... It doesn't look great," McCullum was quoted as saying by the newspaper.
Milne's pace colleague Mitchell McClenaghan said he was absolutely gutted for the man. "He had his (T20I) debut (as an 18-year-old in 2010), went back (to domestic cricket) worked on his accuracy and returned. To see someone bowl that quick and accurately is a throwback to the Shane Bond days."
